Theory
Why did sound collage develop? It could be that collage became a distinctive part of modern sound and visual art as a response to the cataclysmic events of the two World Wars. It may also be that Information - as it gets more diverse tends to fragment and make meaning more complex. As science was discovering smaller and smaller instances of time and form, the technologies used for sampling these fragments became more affordable - many more people including artists, composers and musicians were able to use these techniques to 'glue' together various instances of their experience. The term "eCollage" (electronic Collage) can be used in a collage created by using computer tools and exemplifies this trend of cutting and pasting disparate elements quickly and on the fly.
